There were humans trying to separate my family. I reached out for my mother, and before I knew it, a fence bent in my direction. If I could control it better, they wouldn't have taken us.
[ But Erik moves on, and Neria's brow knits in concern. ]
As if they have not already? [ She frowns. ] It is my great fear they will do so. We are wearing on their patience. Very few of us are conforming to what they desire.
I'm surprised all of us haven't been shoved into the Down, at this rate.
We will be, soon. There are some of us who still hold onto this fantasy they've created that we might be able to become part of their society. I myself thought for awhile, that one day they might accept some of the Dominants.
We don't need to become a part of their society if we do not wish to be. But I feel that even if we try to play their game, we always end up losing. They know we aren't completely sincere...save for a few of our number.
[ There is no judgment there. Some people will simply fall into the roles they have here. ]
You said it yourself: people always turn on those who are different. The odds aren't in our favor, though; it's not as if we can completely acclimate in record time. New arrivals have been trickling in nearly every month. They cannot expect all of us to fall in line - and not so easily, either.
[ But all of things are too obvious, she wishes to say. Perhaps that's unkind or presumes too much. Instead, Neria's voice pitches lowly. ]
It's all right not to have plans. Upheaval seems fairly common, these days. But...perhaps it's time to reach out, Erik. One person cannot be responsible for every plan, successful or not. I think, for something like this, we will need many people to make any sort of difference.
[ She follows him, taking her time to look around at all of the changes, where he's allows for more room, enough for another floor. The smell is comforting, as someone from an age where stone and lumber were much of what they had. ]
It's perfect. You can continue. This will work very well for what I have in mind.

I look forward to it.

How long have you known you were different? When did your gift manifest itself?

[ He turns to her to tell this part. ]

You can't blame yourself. You had just come into your gifts. Their cruelty is no reflection on you. But...why were they separate your family?

But the short of it is that humans don't even accept each other.
[ There's a sad look in his eyes, forlorn, but it's gone in a breath. ]
I really think they will marginalize us, the newcomers.

I should have known better.

Mystique will tell you, I usually have several plans.
Here, I have none.
[ And in the meantime, the whole expansion has been framed. ]
Want to come take a look? I'd like to be inside for the next step, anyway.

Which is it's own disadvantage, but--
[ She gestures. ]
Let's go inside.

[ He takes the stairs, having all his tools follow behind him as he makes it into the new space which smells so strongly of fresh lumber. ]
This should give you an idea of the space. Are we good to proceed?

[ Part of this, he will have to do by hand. And that will be much slower, even if he has pipes and tools to act as secondary hands. ]
I'm not sure if you want to be around for the rest of this, it could take awhile.

[ She glances around once more. ]
You have my number. You can call me if you need any input and I can come back in an hour or so. I can treat you to coffee this time.

I'd like that.
See you in an hour or two.
